'Awl
عَوْل
Pronunciation: OWL
Proportional reduction of inheritance shares when the Qur'anic shares total more than 100% of the estate.
Definition
When the prescribed shares of the Qur'anic heirs sum to more than 100% of the estate, each heir's share is proportionally reduced by 'awl. Example: a husband (1/2) and two sisters (2/3 combined) together claim 7/6 of the estate — the husband's share is reduced to 3/7 and the sisters' combined share to 4/7.
'Awl is the mirror image of radd. Both doctrines are how Islamic inheritance mathematically reconciles the fixed Qur'anic shares with the actual size of the surviving heir group.
