Our Verdict
Azzad is one of the most institutionally serious halal asset managers in America: real Shariah governance with external audits, the country's only halal fixed-income mutual fund in WISEX - its standout product - and a full wealth-management practice around it. The honest caveats are performance and cost: flagship ADJEX has trailed its benchmark since inception, both funds carry active-management expense ratios in an era of cheap halal ETFs, and the wrap program's $500K minimum puts the advisory relationship out of most households' reach.
What We Like
What Could Be Better
Conservative halal investors and retirees needing income without bonds - WISEX's sukuk portfolio is the only mutual-fund vehicle of its kind in the US
High-net-worth families ($500K+) wanting a full-service halal advisory relationship with external Shariah audits and estate/waqf planning
Muslim business owners setting up halal 401(k) plans - Azzad's retirement practice packages funds and fiduciary support for employer plans
Azzad Asset Management, founded in 1997 and headquartered in Falls Church, Virginia, is one of the longest-running dedicated halal investment advisers in the US, reporting $1.8 billion under management as of December 31, 2025 (company-published). Founder and CEO Bashar Qasem holds AAOIFI's Certified Shariah Adviser and Auditor credential - unusual for a US firm principal - and the firm's client base spans roughly 800 families across 30 states per its FAQ (its stats banner says 1,500 households; the discrepancy is one of several site-data inconsistencies our audit flagged). Its two mutual funds are distributed by Paralel Distributors LLC.
The Azzad Wise Capital Fund (WISEX) is the franchise product and a genuine category-of-one: launched April 6, 2010 as the first US halal fixed-income mutual fund, it holds a 223-position portfolio that is 68.69% sukuk plus Islamic bank deposits (11.56%) and trade finance (4.04%), with a short 2.28-year duration and a 0.89% net expense ratio on a $4,000 minimum. Its fixed-income sleeve is sub-advised by Federated Investment Management. Performance has justified the concept - WISEX beats its benchmark over the trailing 5-year, 10-year, and since-inception periods and has won four Lipper Fund Awards (2014, 2023, 2024, 2025). For Muslims who need capital preservation or income without touching conventional bonds, there is essentially nothing else like it in a US mutual-fund wrapper.
The Azzad Ethical Fund (ADJEX), launched December 22, 2000, is billed as the only halal-screened US mid-cap fund: 73 holdings managed by Jamal Elbarmil against the Russell Midcap Growth index, with a $1,000 minimum ($500 IRA) and a 0.99% net expense ratio - after a fee waiver from 1.12% gross that runs through December 2029. The record is the soft spot: since inception ADJEX has returned 5.96% annualized versus 8.21% for its benchmark (through 3/31/2026, company fact sheet). Twenty-five years is long enough that the gap can't be attributed to a bad stretch, and cost-conscious halal investors can now assemble mid-cap exposure via cheaper passive vehicles - the fair counterpoint being that ADJEX remains the only actively managed, dedicated halal mid-cap option with this governance stack.
That governance stack is Azzad's real differentiator, structured in three layers. First, AAOIFI standards as baseline: companies fail the screen if debt exceeds 30%, accounts receivable exceed 45%, interest income exceeds 5%, or haram revenue exceeds 5% of total; conventional insurance is excluded as gharar. Screening runs on proprietary ISFA software fed by Thomson Reuters and MSCI data, and Azzad adds discretionary ethical exclusions - fracking, for-profit prisons, and conflict-zone involvement - that go beyond standard halal filters. Second, a standing Shariah Advisory Board with published credentials: Prof. Mohamad Mustafa Al Zuhili (PhD, Al-Azhar), Sheikh Dr. Nazih Hammad (Muslim World League Fiqh Council, formerly of Citi Islamic and Credit Suisse Islamic), and Dr. Ali Sartawi (PhD, University of Jordan, former Palestinian Minister of Justice). Third - and rarest - annual external Shariah audits by IFAAS since June 2015, which Azzad claims made it the first US firm to submit to outside compliance auditing. Most US halal managers stop at layer one or two.
Beyond the funds, Azzad operates as a full wealth manager. The Ethical Wrap Program offers separately managed accounts at a $500,000 minimum with a planning fee that 'starts at 1% and declines,' allocating across nine model portfolios - six run by outside institutional managers (D.F. Dent, Kayne Anderson Rudnick, SKBA, Tributary, M3Sixty) and three in-house (REIT, Dividend, Mid Value). The Islamic-planning practice is unusually deep: zakah is calculated for clients on 23 Sha'ban with adjustments for IRA taxes and penalties and khars estimation for income stocks; a purification calculator handles impure income; the retirement practice builds halal 401(k)s for employers; and the estate side spans the Waqfi donor-advised fund ($25,000 for a perpetual endowment version versus $5,000 traditional) and the first US Islamic Family Waqf, co-developed with Shariawiz - announced in Azzad's own press release dated December 16, 2021. The firm's substance outruns its website hygiene: our audit logged conflicting client counts, a stale platform list still naming Scottrade and TD Ameritrade, fund-page typos, and unfinished template text - cosmetic issues, but worth noting for a firm of this caliber.
Azzad's compliance architecture works in three layers. Screening applies AAOIFI financial ratios - disqualifying companies with debt above 30%, receivables above 45%, interest income above 5%, or impermissible revenue above 5% - plus discretionary ethical exclusions (fracking, for-profit prisons, conflict zones), implemented through its proprietary ISFA system on Thomson Reuters and MSCI data. WISEX replaces conventional bonds with sukuk (asset-based certificates paying profit rather than interest), Islamic bank deposits, and trade finance. Oversight then comes from the named Shariah Advisory Board and an outside Shariah compliance officer, and the whole operation is externally audited annually by IFAAS - the verification step that distinguishes claimed compliance from audited compliance. Impure income that slips through is addressed via the firm's purification calculator and client guidance.
Choose your entry point
Buy the funds directly (ADJEX from $1,000, WISEX from $4,000) or through brokerage platforms; the wrap program requires $500,000.
Funds invest within the triple screen
AAOIFI ratios, discretionary ethical exclusions, and board oversight govern every holding - mid-cap growth equities in ADJEX, sukuk and Islamic deposits in WISEX.
Wrap clients get managed portfolios
Nine model portfolios run by outside institutional managers and Azzad's own team, wrapped with financial planning for a fee starting near 1% and declining with assets.
Purify, pay zakah, and plan your estate
Azzad calculates zakah on 23 Sha'ban with IRA adjustments, provides purification amounts, and offers waqf-based giving and estate planning with Shariawiz.
Oversight Level
Third-Party Certified - externally verified for compliance
Shariyah Review Bureau certifies Azzad funds. AAOIFI-aligned screening methodology.
Azzad's Shariah Advisory Board: Prof. Mohamad Mustafa Al Zuhili (PhD from Al-Azhar University), Sheikh Dr. Nazih Hammad (member of the Muslim World League's Fiqh Council with prior roles at Citi Islamic and Credit Suisse Islamic), and Dr. Ali Sartawi (PhD, University of Jordan; former Palestinian Minister of Justice). An outside Shariah Compliance Officer sits between the board and operations, and CEO Bashar Qasem holds AAOIFI's CSAA credential.
Since June 2015 Azzad has undergone annual external Shariah audits by IFAAS (Islamic Finance Advisory & Assurance Services) - by its own claim the first US investment firm to do so. External audit is the strongest form of compliance verification available in the US market, and remains rare among halal managers.
Screening follows AAOIFI standards - interest-bearing debt under 30%, accounts receivable under 45%, interest income under 5%, and impermissible revenue under 5% - with conventional insurance excluded as gharar, plus discretionary screens for fracking, for-profit prisons, and conflict-zone involvement. Impure income is quantified for purification, and zakah guidance is delivered annually on 23 Sha'ban.
Shariah compliance should always be verified directly with Azzad Asset Management. HalalWallet reports publicly available oversight information but does not issue fatwas or certify compliance.
Azzad competes with Amana/Saturna and ShariaPortfolio for managed halal portfolios; WISEX is its unique asset, while cost-focused investors weigh SP Funds ETFs.
Amana (Saturna) is far larger with a stronger flagship-equity record; Azzad counters with WISEX - the only US halal fixed-income mutual fund - plus external Shariah audits and deeper Islamic planning services.
vs. ShariaPortfolio
ShariaPortfolio's SP Funds ETFs (including a sukuk ETF) offer similar exposures at materially lower expense ratios; Azzad offers mutual-fund wrappers, a named advisory board with IFAAS audits, and a full-service wealth practice.
vs. Wahed Invest
Wahed is the low-minimum robo option for hands-off investors; Azzad targets larger accounts with human advisers, active funds, and estate/waqf planning that a robo can't provide.
If you need halal fixed income, WISEX alone justifies Azzad's place in your portfolio - nothing else in a US mutual fund does what it does, and the firm's audited, three-layer Shariah governance is the best-verified in the market. For equity exposure, weigh ADJEX's 25-year benchmark shortfall and 0.99% fee against cheaper passive alternatives, and reserve the wrap program for households that genuinely need the full advisory relationship.

Azzad manages our family's halal investments. The team in Virginia is responsive and they genuinely understand both Islamic screening and modern portfolio theory. Best of both worlds.
Switched to Azzad from a conventional advisor. The transition was easy and I appreciate that they factor in ESG along with shariah compliance. Two birds one stone.
Good wealth management but the minimums might be high for younger investors. If you have the capital, the service is excellent.
