Didn't think a regular bank could do halal
Got SBA financing through Stearns for my restaurant. They structured it in a way that's compliant which I didn't think a regular bank could do. Pleasantly surprised.

Stearns Bank's Deposit Account is available in Texas, backed by FDIC insurance up to $250,000 per depositor. There is no monthly maintenance fee on this account. Mobile banking is available for on-the-go account management. Texas has a higher-than-average unbanked population (FDIC, 2021), making Shariah-compliant banking options especially important for financial inclusion in the Muslim community. Texas is home to an estimated ~313K Muslims (1.1% of the population) (World Population Review, 2020 estimates). Stearns Bank operates nationwide, so Texas residents have full access to this product.
Stearns Salaam Banking is the rare halal offering that lives inside an FDIC-insured, nationally chartered bank: segregated riba-free deposits earning profit-share from the bank's Islamic financing portfolio, certified by a named three-scholar board against AAOIFI standards. It's arguably the strongest halal deposit option in the US — but it does not offer personal home financing.
Open a Salaam account
Personal checking opens from $50, business and nonprofit accounts from $100, CDs from $500 — online or by phone (800-320-7262), nationwide.
Funds stay segregated
Salaam deposits are kept separate from interest-bearing deposits and are never invested in interest-bearing instruments, while remaining FDIC-insured.
Earn profit share, not interest
Your return is an Expected Profit Rate derived from the bank's Islamic financing portfolio, published on a rate sheet and subject to change.
Optionally link giving
Profit-Link accounts automatically donate 25% or more of your expected monthly returns to nonprofits you choose, at a higher expected rate tier.
Financing Structure
Salaam deposits work on a profit-sharing basis rather than interest: your funds are segregated from Stearns Bank's conventional interest-bearing deposits and deployed into the bank's Islamic financing portfolio (commercial real estate, construction, and equipment deals). You earn an 'Expected Profit Rate' — a projected share of that portfolio's returns, quoted with an expected APY but not contractually guaranteed. CDs use the same profit-sharing logic, with early withdrawal on longer terms handled as a 'discount' rather than an interest penalty. The bank does not publicly name the underlying Islamic contract forms; compliance is certified product-by-product by its Sharia Supervisory Board against AAOIFI standards.
Stearns Salaam Banking is a dedicated Islamic division of Stearns Bank N.A., a nationally chartered, FDIC-insured bank headquartered in St. Cloud, Minnesota that operates nationwide. That charter is the division's defining feature: nearly every other US halal provider is a non-bank finance company or fintech, while Salaam customers get riba-free products inside a regulated bank — with standard Truth in Savings disclosures and FDIC insurance, including customized options to extend coverage beyond the $250,000 limit.
The deposit mechanism is the core innovation. Salaam funds are not invested in interest-bearing instruments and are kept separate from the bank's conventional interest-bearing deposits; depositors instead earn an 'Expected Profit Rate' derived from the performance of Stearns Bank's Islamic Banking financing portfolio. The rate sheet (effective 7/1/2026) shows Market Savings tiers from 0.85% to 2.99% expected APY, Profit-Link savings up to 3.20%, nonprofit savings up to 3.20%, and profit-sharing CDs from a $500 minimum at 3.00–3.96% expected APY. Shorter CDs (3 and 6 month) carry no early-withdrawal discount; 12- and 18-month terms may apply one.
The account lineup covers personal (checking from $50 with fee waivers on three international wires a month, Market Savings, CDs), business (checking, higher-volume Essentials, Market Savings, CDs — all from $100), and a genuinely differentiated nonprofit program: mosques and Islamic schools get free unlimited ACH origination, free incoming wires, five fee-refunded international wires monthly, no minimum balances, plus a $1,000 donation after maintaining a savings account for 12 months and $250 after each subsequent year.
In 2026 the division launched Salaam Profit-Link Market Savings, which channels a customer-chosen portion (minimum 25%) of expected monthly returns to nonprofits — and pays a notably higher expected rate than the standard savings account on balances under $500,000 (2.00% vs 0.85–1.95%). A launch promotion pays a $200 bonus for accounts opened and enrolled by 9/30/2026 that maintain a $1,000 average balance through six consecutive monthly donations.
On the financing side, Salaam offers sharia-compliant commercial real estate acquisition and refinancing, ground-up construction financing (with the bank's construction team managing draws and budget reviews), secured lines of credit for working capital, and equipment financing across industries like hospitality, medical, and manufacturing — including facility and equipment financing for mosques and schools. The critical boundary, stated verbatim on the site: Stearns does 'not currently provide sharia-compliant financing for personal homes,' financing only commercial and investment properties. Homebuyers must look to Guidance Residential, UIF, or IjaraCDC.
Leadership signals institutional commitment rather than a side program: division president Irshad Rasheed sits on the bank-wide leadership roster, bank president Heather Plumski sits on the Islamic Finance Advisory Board alongside Dr. Aamir Rehman (former head of strategy for HSBC Amanah, UNDP senior advisor on Islamic finance) and attorney Wazhma Sadat, and the Salaam division is the only product unit given its own governance section on the corporate about page. The division also sponsors the PBS docuseries 'American Muslims: A History Revealed.'
Stearns is the strongest US option for halal deposits specifically — FDIC insurance plus certified profit-sharing is a combination no non-bank provider matches. For home financing it doesn't compete at all, and credit-union alternatives serve members with a different structure.
UIF pairs deposit products with the home financing Stearns lacks; Stearns counters with a published rate sheet, named scholars, and a nationwide charter.
Jafari is a member-owned Islamic credit union (NCUA-insured); Stearns offers broader commercial financing and nationwide reach without membership requirements.
Guidance is the home-financing specialist Stearns explicitly points away to — many households will pair a Salaam deposit account with a Guidance mortgage.
Bottom Line
For riba-free checking, savings, and CDs with FDIC insurance, a published rate sheet, and a named AAOIFI-standard scholar board, Stearns Salaam Banking is the benchmark in the US market. Pair it with a dedicated provider if you need home financing — Stearns deliberately doesn't offer it.

Got SBA financing through Stearns for my restaurant. They structured it in a way that's compliant which I didn't think a regular bank could do. Pleasantly surprised.
The process was professional but took a while — about 4 months from application to funding. To be fair, SBA loans always take time regardless of the lender.
Used them for equipment financing for my dental practice. Straightforward and the team understood what I needed for halal compliance. Would use again.
