Halal Savings Decision Tool

Emergency fund, down payment, hajj, car, wedding: tell the tool the goal and the date and it shows which halal vehicle fits, which live U.S. accounts match, and what their published expected profit means in dollars.

Direct answer

Where should I keep halal savings?

Match the vehicle to the date. Money needed within a month: non-interest checking. Emergency funds and goals under three years: an FDIC-insured profit-sharing savings account or time deposit at an Islamic banking division (Stearns Bank Salaam, UIF, Bank of Whittier publish expected rates of roughly 0.85% to 3.96% by tier and term). Three to seven years with some tolerance for price movement: a sukuk fund. Seven years or more: a halal equity ETF. The tool filters live accounts by your amount, insurance requirement, and whether the money is personal, business, or nonprofit.

  • Short horizon: insured profit-sharing accounts, never equities
  • Expected profit rates are targets, not guarantees; principal is insured
  • Published 2026 expected rates: about 0.85% to 3.96% depending on tier and term
  • Interest already received from a conventional bank: give it away, then move

What "expected APY" means on a halal account

Islamic banking divisions publish an expected profit-sharing rate derived from their financing portfolio. It is a target, not a promise; the actual credited profit can differ. The account is still FDIC-insured for your principal. If your current conventional bank pays interest, our banking guide covers what to do with interest already received.

How the tool decides

Time horizon first, then insurance, then ownership. Under a year or an emergency fund: insured profit-sharing savings. One to three years: time deposit first, savings second, sukuk only if you accept price movement. Three to seven years: sukuk leads if uninsured is acceptable, otherwise time deposits. Beyond seven years: equity ETFs lead. Business and nonprofit owners see the business and nonprofit account variants that Islamic banking divisions publish separately. The rules are deliberately conservative; a scholar or advisor can override them for your situation.

How to use this comparison: Scholars rule; we organize the evidence. HalalWallet is an independent educational comparison platform - by design, we do not issue fatwas or provide financial, legal, or tax advice. We do the research homework so your final checks are quick and personal. Where our role ends and who takes over.

Product structures and Shariah oversight vary by provider, so finish with three built-in steps:

  • Confirm current terms and halal compliance directly with the provider - their quote is final.
  • Review the contract structure (Murabaha, Ijara, Musharakah, etc.) and any disclosed Shariah board opinions.
  • Bring your shortlist to a qualified Islamic finance advisor or scholar, so the conversation is about your situation, not the basics.
