Our take
SPTCX is the right idea for a Muslim investor in their 20s or 30s who wants a retirement fund they never have to touch, and its chart-topping first year will draw attention. Read the holdings before buying on that: a third of the fund is global technology, which is where the return came from and where the next drawdown will too. Compliance is inherited cleanly from the SP Funds ETFs, with sukuk standing in for bonds and cash held without interest. The real objection is cost - at 1.33% this is the most expensive wrapper in the SP Funds lineup for an allocation that is 88% equity and, at this horizon, indistinguishable from the 2040 fund. Fine inside a plan menu; outside one, SPUS plus SPWO at 0.45-0.55% does the same job.
Strengths
- Self-rebalancing halal retirement allocation for younger savers in a single mutual fund
- Underlying ETFs each publish Sharia certificates and quarterly purification factors
- Top of its U.S. News category on one-year return (institutional class, to 9/30/2026)
- $250 minimum, waived in IRAs and employer plans
Watch-outs
- 1.33% Investor-class expense ratio - the highest in the SP Funds family and roughly three times the underlying ETFs
- Allocation is nearly identical to the 2040 fund - the extra decade buys no additional equity exposure
- 32% technology weight makes it far more concentrated than a conventional 2050 fund
- Smallest of the three at ~$5.9M with a track record only since mid-2024; no fund-level Shariah certificate
Is the SPFunds SP Funds 2050 Target Date Fund (SPTCX) halal?
SPTCX inherits its compliance from the five SP Funds ETFs it holds. Each is screened to AAOIFI standards (less than 5% impure revenue, interest-bearing debt capped at roughly 30-33% of market cap) and publishes a Certificate of Sharia Accreditation and Sharia Auditor Report; the prospectus states the Adviser engages a third party to certify those affiliated funds. The small fixed-income sleeve is sukuk via SPSK rather than conventional bonds, and the fund's cash does not earn interest. The honest caveat is that there is no fund-level certificate or purification factor - SP Funds publishes purification per ETF, so investors must apply the look-through. The 2050 fund held no gold position at the October 2026 snapshot.
Shariah oversight disclosed by SPFunds
Fund-of-funds holding SP Funds' AAOIFI-screened ETFs; Shariah compliance is certified at the underlying-ETF level by a third party engaged by the Adviser.
