Robo-Advisor vs DIY Halal Investing Cost Calculator

Same return, same contributions, different costs. See what a halal robo-advisor's fee stack costs against holding halal ETFs yourself, in dollars, over your real time horizon.

Direct answer

Robo-advisor or DIY for halal investing: which costs less?

DIY costs less in cash in almost every scenario because you skip the advisory fee layer; the question is whether the robo's automation (rebalancing, purification reporting, staying invested) is worth that layer to you. On $10,000 plus $500 a month for 20 years at 7% gross, the gap between a 0.49% + $60/yr robo holding 0.50% funds and a 0.45% ETF held directly is roughly $30,000 before counting your time. Adjust the presets to your own quote.

  • Robo fee = advisory % + flat fee + underlying fund expense ratio
  • DIY fee = ETF expense ratio + optional screener + your time
  • Presets come from fee strings each provider currently publishes
  • Purification is owed on both paths; only the effort differs

What this does not capture

  • Behavior. Robo users tend to stay invested through downturns because rebalancing is automatic. That can be worth more than the fee.
  • Purification. Robos typically compute and report the purification amount; DIY investors must do it themselves from fund reports.
  • Tax-loss harvesting and account types. Some robos offer IRA wrappers and automated tax features; a DIY brokerage may or may not.
  • Fee changes. Presets use fee strings currently published by each provider; confirm on their site before deciding.

When the robo wins anyway

  • You have sold in a downturn before. Automatic rebalancing removes the decision.
  • You want purification computed and reported without reading fund letters.
  • You are opening an IRA and want the allocation handled from day one.
  • Your balance is under about $20,000, where the flat fee matters more than the percentage and the time saved is worth it.

When DIY wins clearly

  • You are comfortable holding two to four ETFs and rebalancing once or twice a year.
  • Your balance is large enough that 0.4-0.5% a year is real money.
  • You already use a brokerage for an IRA or 401(k) rollover and do not want a second platform.

How to use this comparison: Scholars rule; we organize the evidence. HalalWallet is an independent educational comparison platform - by design, we do not issue fatwas or provide financial, legal, or tax advice. We do the research homework so your final checks are quick and personal. Where our role ends and who takes over.

Product structures and Shariah oversight vary by provider, so finish with three built-in steps:

  • Confirm current terms and halal compliance directly with the provider - their quote is final.
  • Review the contract structure (Murabaha, Ijara, Musharakah, etc.) and any disclosed Shariah board opinions.
  • Bring your shortlist to a qualified Islamic finance advisor or scholar, so the conversation is about your situation, not the basics.
